Our vision

The Nova Scotia Sisterhood Initiative represents a transformative approach to healthcare for African Nova Scotian and Black women. Built on the success of the Brotherhood Initiative, our program addresses the unique healthcare challenges faced by Black women through culturally competent care, comprehensive support services, and community empowerment.

Understanding the Need

Extensive community engagement in 2019 revealed the critical need for healthcare services specifically designed for African Nova Scotian and Black women. Our research showed how racism and social determinants of health significantly impact Black women’s health outcomes.

The Nova Scotia Sisterhood Initiative could potentially identify many needs within the community and play a role in accessing information about employment opportunities, promoting access to services, treatments, and supports, as well as promoting health and fostering the conditions for good physical and mental well-being.
