HAAC: Scholarships for Black Students in Nova Scotia Health Careers

The Health Association of African Canadians (HAAC) is committed to investing in the next generation as well as those who wish to pursue careers in health at various points in life. HAAC believes that educating, encouraging, and facilitating success for youth and adults is essential to our improved health and collective future. HAAC has launched annual scholarships in the names of two of our late leaders. We will always remember and honor their contributions while investing in our people.

Reverend Phyllis Marsh- Jarvis

Rev. Phyllis Marsh-Jarvis Scholarship

Reverend Mother Phyllis Marsh Jarvis was a Past Co-President and a long-standing HAAC Director of Rural and Community Engagement in Sydney. She was the first woman in Nova Scotia ordained by the African Orthodox Church and was Minister at St. Philip’s African Orthodox Church. Phyllis conducted numerous outreach workshops regarding health and initiated the Senior Project in Whitney Pier. She authored several articles on many health issues that affect Black people and was featured in several others. During her career, Rev. Phyllis served on several diverse community boards and was a Dialogue for Peaceful Change Facilitator. Her life’s work was devoted to fighting for equity in Black health, and she has left an indelible mark on us.

This scholarship is available for full and part-time students of African Ancestry who are attending a recognized college or University in Nova Scotia in their pursuit of a career in the health professions.

Duane Winter

Duane Winter Memorial Scholarship

HAAC is deeply saddened by the unexpected death of our brother, Duane Winter, Community Liaison Coordinator for The Nova Scotia Brotherhood. Duane was also a cherished member of the HAAC Family. He was committed to the Communities he served in his role with the NS Brotherhood. His passing is a huge loss for all of us, and he will be greatly missed. Thus, HAAC lovingly created the Duane Winter Memorial Foundation in June 2024 in honor of Duane’s memory and legacy. Duane had a passion for youth education and the importance of youth working in the community. This scholarship is available to full-time and part-time students of African Ancestry who are attending a recognized college or University in their pursuit of a career in the helping professions.
